Information on history of bilateral relations

On December 31, 1991 the Kingdom of The Netherlands recognized the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan; on April 1, 1992 diplomatic relations between two countries was established.

The Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan was opened in the Kingdom of the Netherlands in May 2007.

Economic cooperation

In recent years bilateral economic missions, business forums, as well as other activities organized with support of the Embassy opened a new phase in practical cooperation between Azerbaijan and the Netherlands.

4 business forums were organized between two countries: in September 2012 headed by Deputy Prime Minister  Maxime Verhagen, 19-21 November 2013 headed by the Mayor of Rotterdam Ahmed Aboutaleb, 23-25 April, 2014 headed by the member of Senate of the Netherlands Rene van der Linden, 23-24 April 2015 headed by the Minister of Economy of Azerbaijan Shahin Mustafayev and Minister of Economy of the Netherlands Henk Kamp. On 17th of May, 2016 another business forum between countries took place in Baku.    

According to the information of the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Azerbaijan 9.1% (668 million US dollars) of direct investments to nonoil sector is made by the Dutch investors. This number brings the Netherlands to the 4th place after Turkey, Great Britain and USA. Around 110 Dutch companies perform successfully in Azerbaijan in the fields of trade, service, bank, insurance, industry, construction, transport, communication and etc..

Other fields of bilateral cooperation

Joint MBA (Master of Business Administration) program in the field of energy management opened in 2013 between Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy and Maastricht School of Management successfully continues. Graduates of this program are granted by both ADA and MSM diplomas.   

Institute of International Relations of the Netherlands “Clingendael” organizes the annual training course for Eastern Partnership countries’ diplomats. The cooperation between Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy and Clingendael Institutes continues.   

In the framework of cooperation between Embassy and The Hague Academy of International Law seminars related to Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict are organized every year for specialist in the field of international law and legal affairs.   

In order to discuss problems of diaspora, key issues of agenda and coordinate activities the Embassy regularly organizes numerous meetings, debates, exchange of views, round tables with the heads and representatives of the leading diaspora organizations - Benelux Azerbaijanis Congress, the Azerbaijani-Turkish Cultural Association, "Motherland" Union of Azerbaijani Women of the Netherlands and others as well as with representatives of Dutch community Netherlands-Azerbaijani Communication Platform – NACP and Dutch Friends of Azerbaijan created by Dutch society.

Since 16th of December 2013 with the aim to promote Azerbaijani language and literature with support of the Embassy the school named after Nizami Ganjavi was opened and started its activity under coordination of "Motherland" Union of Azerbaijani Women of the Netherlands. Besides the Azerbaijani language and literature students gain knowledge on ancient history of our country, rich culture and so on. In order to keep classes on needed level the Embassy provides the school with textbooks and manuals.
